Providing a single-source fabrication and assembly solution for chamber-type stainless steel enclosures used in a high-tech OEM application involves combining varied manufacturing operations, precise inventory management and complex assembly.

The vertically integrated Schaffer Manufacturing solution includes:

  • TIG welding #4 brushed stainless steel to maintain cosmetic finish
  • Laser and water jet cutting
  • Punching
  • Forming
  • Powder coating steel
  • Dedicated space and systems to assemble approximately 200 components per enclosure
  • Production scheduling to deliver build-to-order systems on short lead times
  • Responding to in-process customization modifications

The OEM selected Schaffer for its agility delivering high quality in a complex fabrication and assembly scenario, but took a conservative – and understandable – approach to consolidating work with a single supplier. As a result, the OEM initially tapped Schaffer to supply enclosures for just one of the multiple models that it sells, and outsourced other product line configurations to another supplier.

Over time, and given the opportunity to confirm Schaffer capacity, stability and dependability, the OEM has added three additional models to the sourcing relationship.
