An OEM customer develops, manufactures and supplies specialized agricultural equipment for agribusiness niche markets worldwide. One of its products is a hydraulics-powered dump cart used to quickly and efficiently transfer harvested crops for truck transport from the field.

Schaffer Manufacturing fabricates and powder coats three models of the large, welded dump cart assemblies built from tubing, sheet stock and heavy plate that exceeds 1” for some components. Completed carts are 11 feet high, 11 feet wide, and up to 17 feet long. The largest cart provides 885 cubic feet of load capacity.

Manufacturing takes place in a Schaffer production bay dedicated to and equipped for large-weldment fabrication. With a 30-foot oven on the powder coating line, Schaffer can provide the OEM with a single resource for fabricating and painting the large assemblies.

Schaffer initially manufactured the assemblies on an “as needed” schedule. By collaborating with the customer to work from quarterly and semi-annual purchase order releases, Schaffer was able to cost-reduce the assemblies. Schaffer also inventories two complete units for each of the three dump cart models, which are painted and packaged in assembly ready kits. The kit strategy shortens lead times (which can be lengthy for large weldments) and enables the OEM to reduce changeover downtime by adjusting assembly schedules on very short notice.
